Workforce Availability in Winnebago and Boone Counties

• Employed Workforce: 434,800
• Available Workforce: 65,000 for new or expanding businesses

Quality, Plentiful Workforce in Rockford, Study Finds
"65,000 potential employees for new or expanding businesses in the Rockford area, that's a good number," said Steven J. Goode of Venture One Real Estate, a Chicago developer handling the Loves Park Corporate Center and Rock 39 Industrial Park in the Rockford area. "The real estate brokerage community will be interested in knowing that," he added.

Workforce

A labor shed study of the Rockford area's Winnebago and Boone Counties conducted by The Pathfinders, a site-selection consultant, found that:

  • Of the area's labor force of 434,800 people who are currently employed, about 46,200 workers, or 11%, are interested in changing jobs. That compares favorably to other similar-sized communities.
  • There is also a pool of 16,800 unemployed people who are actively seeking work and 2,500 unemployed who might re-enter the workforce, bringing the available workforce number for new or expanding businesses to 65,000.
  • Employers interviewed gave 91% "excellent" or "good" scores on the area's worker productivity and reliability; an 88% "excellent" or "good" score on worker attitudes.
  • A companion commuter study found that an additional 42,600 people or 26% of the employed labor force live in the area but commute to other counties. Of those, 73% said they would take a comparable job in the Rockford area if one were available.

TIFs Available in Rockford Area; Can Lower Re-Development Costs

Tax Increment Financing (TIF) is available for development and re-development projects in the increasingly desirable greater Rockford area. Many area municipalities are aggressive in creating TIFs for projects that add value to the area.

TIF is a financing and development tool that allows future property taxes to pay for infrastructure and other improvements.

A prime example of a revenue-positive TIF district is the Global Trade Park, a 6,600-acre industrial park surrounding the Chicago/Rockford International Airport (RFD). It's home to UPS's third largest regional sorting facility with a $25 million upgrade.

Anderson Packaging

Another Global Trade Park company, Anderson Packaging, a subsidiary of AmerisourceBergen, will become the single largest pharmaceutical site in the world when it completes its $15 million, 260,000 sq. ft. addition

For more information, contact Eric Voyles, RAEDC vice president of national business development at 815.987.8118, ext. 106 or evoyles@rockfordil.com. For Global Trade Park TIF information, contact Rob Lamb, City of Rockford industrial development manager, 815.967.6729 or robert.lamb@ci.rockford.il.us.
