Labor costs involve two factors: wages or salaries, and productivity of workers. Higher wages can be paid to workers where productivity is high. A brief comparison of Rockford and other MSAs in Illinois on selected occupational titles common in Rockford provides insights into the competitiveness of the Rockford MSA. An average of the hourly wages is provided without an adjustment for relative cost of living or productivity. A simple review shows of the 54 occupations listed, the Rockford MSA is below the average of the other MSAs in 21 cases, and is higher in the remaining 33 instances.
